Sequel of my unfortunate Adventures in Linuxland (see my previous post about switching from Linux to Windows).

While I was completely unable to do anything with my Linux installation (LILO failing to start and the bootable rescue CD couldn't repair the boot sector) I booted on Windows which was installed on another hard drive and then, using a neat software called Explore2fs (WIN32 explorer for Linux ext2fs partitions) I eventually managed to copy my /home directory to another (Windows) disk. Thank God, I did not lose my data (a few useless divx, some cool bash scripts, local mirrors of my websites and thousands of more than precious photos)

"Cannot find your root device :-(". Fourth hard drive to die on my Linux box, suddenly, after a completely normal and clean reboot, without my changing anything in the hardware or software config. This time it is too much. I'm migrating all my small LAN server tasks and file sharing to Windows and I'm definitely getting rid of Linux, except maybe if I end up setting up another spare computer. God I'm seriously pissed.

Interesting. Google is introducing specifications and protocol for a web site map. This will be an XML document containing links of your site, their modification date and frequency of change. The goal, with no guaranty that this will be done, is to improve Google's crawling and indexing your site (and supplements Googlebot's usual crawl-based mechanisms)

Such a site map is easily doable for database driven websites such as blogs. I expect some activity in the WordPress community on this topic in the next days, and a quick user has already written a first Google Sitemap Generator for WordPress. This is a nice start, and I have commented the page with some suggestions to improve it.

One day, I founded an online gaming clan with two other buddies. I had no particular goal in mind, except that I wanted to have fun with a game I was seriously getting addicted to (Quake 2) and to make a website with a concept. So there it was : the French Frag Factory was born, with "We are not a clan, we are a limited company" as a tagline (rough translation of "Nous ne sommes pas un clan, nous sommes une SARL")

This day was June 1st, 1998. And today, exactly seven years later, my clan French Frag Factory is still active, now playing Quake3, still involved in several online competitions, putting some glue in the French community with a news page updated several times a day, that by the way just served its 4th million readers (or maybe there are only 10 readers refreshing all day long ?:)

Yes, I'm really proud of all the things I've done in and for the "French Quake Scene". Happy Birthday, French Frag Factory :)

What an interesting hack : customizing the auto-scroll icon (the little arrow that appears when you middle click on a page to scroll it down) (works with Firefox). I’ve been staring at this page for about 10 minutes wondering what uber cool use could be made of this trick, but well, I have no idea :) (3) «

A call to my French readers : do they know of any French blog design ? My feed reader has the typical subscription on well know design fames (456 Berea Street, which is the best in my opinion, Malarkey, Whitespace, etc…) but so far there is only one French site. Any other around ?

Referundum Europe 2005, trop un blagueur ce PPDA : “il reste encore 20 minutes pour connaître le nom du camp qui l’emportera”. Mon dieu quel suspens. (0) «
Ctrl-A: pictures that change when you “Select All” (MSIE only). Some rather obvious, a few smart ones. I have to learn how to do this :) (3) «

If you are using MSIE, here is something to check out : have a look at my Flickr Profile, and compare with another profile. If you are not using MSIE, here is what you are missing : Skinning Flickr with an XSS exploit.

Updated May 27th : Flicker admins fixed this issue so the exploit is no longer possible with MSIE. I'm such a good person sometimes :) Look at the screenshot and explanations anyway :)
