Anyone can notify about bugs in WordPress using Trac, where also anyone can submit patches to fix them. When someone actually submits a patch which is later on approved by head developers and included in WordPress' core, the changelog contains a tiny credit to them: "props Joti" for example (props meaning something like thanks, yeepee, kudos, or respect).

Do you know the people, or more likely some of the people, who helped in making your blogware and beloved WordPress more reliable, more usable, more bloggable? I thought it would be nice giving some props to these fine WordPress bug fixers, so I went for some digging and made up the WordPress Bug Fixers Heat Map (aka Cloud)

Top 30 Countries for Broadband Internet Access. Japan, Korea, Finland, Sweden & France have the fastest connexions. Interestingly, the fattest average bandwidth, the cheaper it gets: graphs for average bandwidth and average prices are almost exactly inverted. (1) «

In a few days (September 5-7, 2007) Finland will be holding the Air Guitar World Championships. WTF, you say? I've just spent half an hour on Youtube watching Air Guitar videos, and boy I laughed hard:)

Basically, it's playing the guitar, except you have no guitar. And they make local, regional, national and eventually World Championships with this! If you think the following video is not funny, well, we're just not friends anymore.

For the record, the Korean psychopath featured above is 2003 World Champion. Get Guitarded ! (via)

Headbanging link of the day: MetalAd creates a skyscraper-like banner from your heavy metal tastes (as stored by Last.fm). (my metal ad for instance). The generating PHP script is even open-sourced. (3) «

Hot from the press: I got 4th spot (also known as "Consolation Prize":) at the WordPress Plugin Competition, with my (uberleet) plugin Who Sees Ads (also known as "The Ultimate Ad Management Plugin").

I'm pretty happy about it, especially given how my plugin is not geared toward the majority of WP users: most are not running ads, or are not interested enough in online advertising to grasp the benefit of not always displaying ads.

I'm pretty happy about it because winning something is very rewarding. Writing plugins is a hobby, I do it for the fun and as a way to share something I like doing (coding). Whenever someone rewards me, be it with a small donation or with a nice competition prize, it feels extremely pleasant and warm in the inside.

And I'm very happy about this prize because it might bring home something I completely dig: a poster from Wallhogs. I say might because Wallhog is a website & company I've been watching since they launched, desperately waiting for their… shipping to Europe damnit!! Let's hope for this very special occasion an overseas deal will be possible :)

As for my plugin Who Sees Ads, it's been updated to 1.01: a minor yet annoying bug would prevent cookies from being properly written under PHP 4.x, so get the new version if that's your case. Thanks a lot to Andrew for his noticing about this.

Little Miss Sunshine: OMG. I laughed to tears. (2) «
Something I learnt today: “Be conservative in what you do; be liberal in what you accept from others”, which is the Robustness Principle, also known as Postel’s Law. So true. (0) «

Have you ever "ls -l" a file or directory, watch its "-r-x–s-wT" symbolic notation and ask to yourself: "what the hell is that chmod ?". This was the case for me several times today, so before I spent 1 minute on thinking about the notation, I decided to spent 5 minutes on a quick Perl script. What Chmod converts those stinky —xr-s-wT into the octal 3152 value.
