The amazingly talented Stu Nicholls launched another fun CSS project, showcasing a neat way to reduce and enlarge images without affecting the positioning of surrounding images, using just an unordered list and CSS.

You've heard about the (silly) Million Dollar Home Page and you've thought that's definitely unclassy (and not worth any money). Real CSS geeks love Stu's Zero Dollar Ads Page !

The Typo Trap, 4 days after launch : how did this internal linkage mayhem get crawled by search engines ? Every page there generates about 120 random internal links from 3000 keywords, plus an infinite number of misspelled links (with tag rel="nofollow"), I was wondering if it would catch some bots.

  • MSN Bot came by about 8 hours after the stuff went live. And indexed 8 times the index.php page since.
  • Googlebot first came about 9 hours after public launch. Then, 10 hours later, it came back, and fetched 96 pages in less than 30 seconds. How nice on server load.
  • Yahoo's Slurp showed up about 3 hours after the site was launched. It has been indexing more than 8000 pages since its first visit, and counting as of writing, following even links with rel="nofollow". I guess this is part of Yahoo's "we are bigger than Google" plan.
I had never tried MSN Search before today and boy does it suck. I pity this search engine. (2) «

There is an interesting article on the fun and caustic SEO Black Hat about the fact that deliberately misspell keywords can bring some traffic in. This is pretty basic Search Engine Optimization (yet considered rather on the dark side) that aims to take advantage of the fact that people looking for stuff often misspell them (i.e. search for "viagar pills" instead of "viagra pills")

After reading this article, I started to think about ways to automatically generate misspellings. It turned out to be pretty fun and interesting coding it, and an afternoon later, here is the result : the Typo Trap !

As a tool for webmasters, it is of some value for those who are into SEO : generating standard misspellings is plain easy, and the stuff also suggests gazillions of high value common keywords for those who lack inspiration.
And as an SEO experiment, I really wonder if bots will index all the pages and combinations, and if eventually some visitors will land there.

There have been some buzz lately in the blogoworld about blogs and blog networks being sold for ridiculous amounts of money. Then, someone made a short study on blog prices related to their number of incoming links. One step further, and you have this fun how much is your blog worth applet.

Whithout further ado, my blog is worth… Read More

I've been hardly writing anything on a computer for the last few days… A few mail replies, nothing more. Blame the microbes ! I'm ill and I've spent the last 4 days doing nothing but sleeping, try to watch a divx, then sleep again. This has been boring beyond description. The good news is I'm feeling better now, should be ok by Monday. The bad news is, by Monday my wife's parents will be here, spending a whole week. Life sucks sometimes.

As an aside, here is something funny : Flapart, selling alternate book covers (a cover that reads something like "Do-It-Yourself Liposuction")

I've been doing something similar for years now, actually since I began working : on my office desk, there is always a thick book with a cover that reads something really serious (and completely unrelated to my job) about accountancy or nuclear physics. These are real books I find on some abandoned shelf, or that people even bring me. I cannot tell you how effective it is on people who don't know you :)

I have one spare Wordpress.com invite, if anyone is interested. (0) «
