Better Feed is a plugin for WordPress that allows you to enhance your feeds with several highly customizable features.

Features

Using a convenient interface with real time preview, Better Feed will allow you to add anything below each entry in your RSS feed. It also brings back the ability to split your feed with "Read More" links, just like your blog posts.

  • Add "Read more" links
On your site, you can split post on two parts, teaser and body, using the tag <!–more–>. Why not have a "Read more" link as well in your feed, for longer posts, or when you want to tease and keep the surprise off the feed ?
(By the way, while I'm at it : "summary" feeds truncated after 40 words just suck big time. Read more)
  • Add a copyright notice
Concerned with content stealers reproducing your posts automatically somewhere without giving you credit ? Why not add something like "© Joe – 2005" and a link to some neat Creative Commons License ?
  • Add the number of comments
When you find an interesting post via your feed reader, you often have to check the website for new comments, or to subscribe to the comment feed. Why not add, at the end of every RSS item, something like "13 comments", just like in your blog frontpage ?
  • Add a "Add to del.icio.us" link
Let your readers bookmark your entries right from within their RSS reader
  • Add a link for incoming links in Technorati or Google
Why not add a handy link to quickly check who's linking to your post ?
  • Add anything
There's so many stuff you could think of that I just can't list them all :)

Download

Download the plugin :
wp_ozh_betterfeed.zip
Extract and upload to your blog, preserving directory structure if any.
Note: download counter here and stats on wordpress.org may differ and reflect the number of downloads before this plugin was hosted on the plugin directory

Once you're done installing it, head to "Settings" and then "Better Feed". Everything is configured and tested from there.

Please note

A few things you might not get on first run that will save me some support:

  • If you include the number of comments in each feed item, be warned that some feed readers will display an item as "New" every time someone comments on it. It's normal, and it is how I intented it to behave so following conversation is easier than ever.
  • If you're using Feedburner, your feed won't immediately show changes after you've activated the plugin. To do so, go to your Feedburner Dashboard → Troubleshootize → Synchronize.
  • You won't notice any change if you're viewing your feed with your regular browser. Use a feed reader, or this simple service I set up especially for you: RSS 2 HTML

License

This plugin is released under the terms of the BAI & SMYF License. BAI means "Blog About It". Like the plugin? Let your readers know! SMYF stands for "Show Me Your Feed", so if you happen to use my plugin, just tell me so I can see what you've done (and maybe subscribe to your feed if it's cool !)

I solved my issue. My previous comment might not have made complete sense, I was looking that the feed source from Safari and it was renaming things.

Anyway, the issue isn't really with your plugin, it's with the default RSS feed template. It checks $post->post_content and if it doesn't find anything, it just repeats the excerpt. So, even though info is being sent through add_filter to the_content, the RSS feed template thinks there is no post content. I might file a bug report to WordPress — it doesn't make sense to allow the adding of text to the_content if it's just going to be ignored.

  16. This plugin is not compatible with Feed Footer which I use to place alternate ads in my feed. Do you have a suggestion of another way to manage ads in the feed?

I've been longing to use the "read more" tag in my RSS feed for as long as I can remember. This definitely makes my feed BETTER. Thanks!

  17. Nevermind! I answered my own question and was able to insert ads using a PHP function.

Again, thanks so much for an awesome plugin. This is exactly what I needed… I'll be buying you a beer!

  23. Joan Nova says:

The feed feature is exactly what I've been wanting to do for a while. I'd much rather tease with a title and a photo than a summary broken up mid-sentence.
Question: I apologize for my lack of WP-plug-in prowess (I'm new). Which file in the folder that I downloaded is the one that it is uploaded to WP for the feed feature?

  24. Ozh says:

Joan Nova » All. Use the Plugin Installer in your Admin area if you're unsure.

  25. I am having trouble with the plugin. I have it installed and activated, but it's not showing up in my feed. Does this plugin not work with other plugins? I am using WP 2.8.4.

    Thanks!

  26. Trendland says:

OZH plugins rock ! For every WP sites i create I first install the ozh admin ! so thanks for that a lot, now quick question on the better feed: Is it possible to have an image counter rather than wordcount ? I prefer saying how many images we have in the post…

Merci encore pour tout ces amazing plugins…

  27. Joan Nova says:

Downloaded plug-in, went to Feedburner/troubleshootize but there is no 'synchronize', just 'resync' which seems like a last-resort for feeds that are not up-to-date. Is that it?

  37. John Hopkins says:

Just wanted to say thanks. This plugin worked perfectly for me! All I had to do was re-synch over at Feedburner!

I've been looking for something like this for some time.

  38. Eric Nilsson says:

    Hi!

I'm having some problems with this awesome plugin, I can't make it publish full articles in my RSS feed.

I've instructed WordPress to publish full articles in the feed and unchecked the box " Cut the Feed on "Read more" links ()" in better feed. If I disable better feed i can see the whole article, but as soon as I enable better feed, that damn "read more link" still appears .

    Any ideas?

  39. PatF says:

This plugin is great, but I'm having problems with the settings screen in Wp 2.8.4.

I seems that the feed item buttons break after "wordcount_remain" – they all show as php functions after that and make an awful mess.

Is there a fix for this?

  40. Ozh says:

PatF » Probably another plugin that's messing with its JS code. Deactivate other plugins one by one till you find the culprit and point its author to this page.

  41. Bruno says:

This plugin would be absolutly perfect if it would allow to add costum fields!

  42. Bruno says:

Notify me for custom fiels possibility!

  43. Ozh says:

Bruno » what would you like the plugin to do, can you elaborate?

  44. Barbara says:

Oh yes! Custom fields for me too please! I manage http://www.appcraver.com (an iphone app review site).

We store our rating (9/10) in a custom field. We've been using "Custom2Feed Content" to append the fields to the RSS feed. But activating Better Feed seems to override this.

I love Better Feed and use it on two other sites. I'd love to use it for AppCraver too.

  45. Ozh says:

Dudes, I'm all for the custom field stuff, but exactly, what do you expect from it? How would you like it to work? Would just adding a token like %%custom:some_field%% be cool?

  46. Barbara says:

Yep. Something like that would be great. Currently, I have 3 custom fields that output as a bulleted list like so:

    App Name: XXXXX • Rating: 9/10 • Price: $1.99

I think most people have multiple custom fields. So, specifying which field is important. That's pretty much it. Everything else can be handled by the user at that point, right? Using your token, I could write:

    App Name: %%custom:app_name%% • Rating: %%custom:rating%% • Price: %%custom:price%%

  47. Bruno says:

    An example Ozh: http://www.apostaganha.pt/2009/10/30/juventus-vs-napoli-calcio-serie-a/

On the bottom of the posts i have this custom fields:

    Tipster : lmprego (Field value)
(Field key) Pick: (Field value) Juventus AH -1
    (Field key) Odds: (Field value)2.00
    (Field key) Casa de Apostas:
    Resultado: (Field value)

Would be amazing for me to add this to the feed!

    Regards and thanks in advance!

  48. MarkS says:

Thanks for the great plug-in. Is it possible to insert ads in the feeds? I tried inserting my ad code, but my ads aren't appearing. I am using feedburner, but not using google adsense as I was kicked off it.

    Thanks again!
