Code is Poetry” : every WordPress user has read this at least once, on WordPress’ official site, as this is their tagline. And I guess most bloggers think “WordPress” when they read “Code is Poetry”.

Today, while looking for some food in a local supermarket, I’ve seen a guy with a black tee-shirt with a huge “Code is Poetry” on it. I was to say something like “hey d00d ok that’s cool, but have you got a WordPress.com invite as well ? :)” but, as the guy turned back, I saw the other side of his shirt showing … a Microsoft logo and some tiny text I couldn’t read like some place and date for a convention.

WTF. Someone sue them.

Microsoft didn’t do anything wrong there. I read those rumors before that they stole that tagline but they’re false.

I think that code is poetry in any way, and that’s the important thing.

IMHO, I really don’t know if WordPress was the first to make that quote famous… But a few years ago (i’ve been programming for awhile) I tought of code as poetry, in the same way that you could assume that poetry is software itself.. It only lives in the minds of who reads it and gives it a meaning (interpretation), or even produces any kind of perceptual sensation, more or less subjective (and Computer Software or Code lives only in a machine able to understand and execute it).

Code is software too, but the difference it makes -maybe- is that poetry is made for the sake of art… OTOH, code mainly is made for a specific purpose…

Let’s say that code is to poetry what Craftmanship is to Art… And the fact that there’s alot of artists (called PROGRAMMERS) writing beatiful code (let’s say POETRY) for many purposes just resembles a huge Bauhaus… which sadly sometimes forgots it’s roots.

Say then that M$ are the Nazis to tear down that Bauhaus? Not so poetic… Just code and $$$ for it.

    Flames to /dev/null…

Of course it’s not. Neither was I serious when I asked for someone to suit MS. It’s just funny and easy bashing that Microsoft steals something (even if they’re not really stealing, but hey, aren’t we supposed to be partial when it’s about them ? :)
