That would be useless : background images are to be used when images you’re loading are big enough for a light bg file to be displayed. Gravatars are only a few kb so they are displaying instantly.
(off topic : as for your email address, remember that you can insert ‘.’ anywhere in your gmail address, so raynerape = rayner.ape, just register again at gravatar with this trick :)
