Update: Lorelle in the comments has a totally different interpretation on "merging". Much less exciting to be honest :)

Update 2: Jeffro got some clues from Donncha. Bottom line: Merge, as anticipated at first. Yay!

The hot scoop of the day is, as announced by Matt at WordCamp SF, that WordPress and its multi-blog flavor, Mu, will merge.

As Technosailor points it out, this totally makes sense since the two are very close code wise, and this will give the opportunity to BuddyPress to expand its reach by large.

For those who have never tried Mu, it's pretty much exactly the same thing as vanilla WP. Plugins work the same, themes work the same, blogging work the same, you just get the extra warm feeling when you suddenly set up a side blog in a click. This is great news!

  1. That'll make the support forums more interesting… time for me to dust off a Mu test setup :)

  2. Interesting. I wonder how that will affect plugins? I know some WordPress plugins won't work on WordPress MU without some changes, so presumably there will be changes to make to plugins to get them to work on the combined version.

  3. Lorelle says:

Um, I think there is a lot of misinformation going around. I believe that it is WordPress.org – the site not self-hosted WordPress blogs – that is going to become a WordPressMU site. WordPress.org is going to allow WordPress members to use BuddyPress profiles as part of their login, helping to create communities of WordPress Members.

I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that by having BuddyPress profiles on WordPress.org, people can connect more through the forums, Codex, and their volunteer efforts, as well as their interests in WordPress and outside.

Imagine being able to connect with fellow WordPress users registered with WordPress.org in your community, or fellow fan bloggers using WordPress. Maybe there is a community group of WordPress Plugin Authors working with, say, Google Maps API who want to team up to create some spectacular Plugin? They could connect and find themselves with this new WordPress Community.

I think that is what Matt was talking about, not merging single hosted versions of WordPress with WordPressMU. They are two drastically different animals from a user perspective.

  4. Barry says:

You would have thought some sort of official post would be up somewhere on this.

@Lorelle – you only "believe" it is the site not the platform, so at the moment it's not really misinformation until it's official one way or the other.

Everyone also seems to have picked up on this word "merge", which has a different meaning to the phrase "will be run by".

  5. Ozh says:

    Barry ยป I concur :)
Hell, there's even a "do_action('muplugins_loaded');" in wp-settings.php, what the hell would this be for then? I still want to believe in a merger :)

  6. Jeffro says:

Well, this comment by Matt should put the co bash on whether it's a merge or "run by" http://www.blogherald.com/2009/06/02/wordpress-and-wordpressmu-merged-whoa/#comment-1033204

Thanks for the link Ozh :)

  7. Jeff Starr says:

Just like with the post-revisioning feature, I have no practical use for MU-functionality. It will be interesting to watch this "merger" unfold.

  8. Waldar says:

I think Calimero is also a nice roxing SARL feature, but this has nothing to do with WP.

  9. Mike says:

I believe that this should be nothing but a good thing for the WordPress community, after all now it just is that much easier to create multiple blogs. Should be interesting how it all shakes out.
