Imagine being able to connect with fellow WordPress users registered with WordPress.org in your community, or fellow fan bloggers using WordPress. Maybe there is a community group of WordPress Plugin Authors working with, say, Google Maps API who want to team up to create some spectacular Plugin? They could connect and find themselves with this new WordPress Community.

I believe that this should be nothing but a good thing for the WordPress community, after all now it just is that much easier to create multiple blogs. Should be interesting how it all shakes out.

Just like with the post-revisioning feature, I have no practical use for MU-functionality. It will be interesting to watch this “merger” unfold.

You would have thought some sort of official post would be up somewhere on this.

@Lorelle – you only “believe” it is the site not the platform, so at the moment it’s not really misinformation until it’s official one way or the other.

Everyone also seems to have picked up on this word “merge”, which has a different meaning to the phrase “will be run by”.

Um, I think there is a lot of misinformation going around. I believe that it is WordPress.org – the site not self-hosted WordPress blogs – that is going to become a WordPressMU site. WordPress.org is going to allow WordPress members to use BuddyPress profiles as part of their login, helping to create communities of WordPress Members.

I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that by having BuddyPress profiles on WordPress.org, people can connect more through the forums, Codex, and their volunteer efforts, as well as their interests in WordPress and outside.

I think that is what Matt was talking about, not merging single hosted versions of WordPress with WordPressMU. They are two drastically different animals from a user perspective.

Interesting. I wonder how that will affect plugins? I know some WordPress plugins won’t work on WordPress MU without some changes, so presumably there will be changes to make to plugins to get them to work on the combined version.
