My kids are currently watching, again and again and again, Disney’s Treasure Planet, and are totally fond of “Jim’s theme”, a pretty cool song actually (”I’m Still Here” in the English release, or “Je suis là ” in the French (Quebec) version they’re watching). They like this song so much that I thought it would be great to extract the mp3 out of the video, and found a very very neat software to do so.
The software from DVDVideoSoft has the spammy name of “Free Video to MP3 Converter“. The site, the software and its name make things look like this is a lousy trialware crippled or limited in features, but it really is just what it says it is, no more, no less.
Give it either a local video file (avi, mpg, wmv, mov, flv, etc) or a YouTube URL, enter the name of the MP3 you want to save, and that’s it.

Trimming a song or a moment from a whole movie is very easily done via this convenient preview screen in which you simply click to set the begin and the end of your selection.

All in all it took me about 20 minutes to make a cool compilation with 10 of their favorite tunes from their favorite movies.
What can I say? It’s great. Simple and efficient, I’m happy :)
